What is open-source?

Open-source means when source-code of computer software is available for free to the general public so that they can see, use, and even modify the code as per their needs to make their own software.

Didn’t get it?? Let’s take a real-life example.

Let’ say you work for a company that makes software for the clients. You write the code for the software and the client pays you for that. Fair enough?? Now it is a private software of your client and he may use it to serve his customers but, its code is not available to any of his customers. They can’t see it, manipulate it, and use it for making their own software. They are just allowed to use the platform your client is offering be it an e-commerce or any other software. This means it is NOT an open-source software.

Ubuntu (A Linux distribution) is open-source software (An operating system). You can see, even use and manipulate the code to make your own operating system. Sounds interesting right??
